Kindred To Decide This Week

One of the better guards on the West Coast is going to reach a decision about his collegiate future this week. Compton Dominguez's Keion Kindred is close to announcing his choice.

UTEP or Minnesota?

Keion Kindred, a 6-2 guard from Compton (CA) Dominguez, will have a decision sometime this week.

"It'll be this upcoming Tuesday or Wednesday I'll be coming up with a decision," Kindred said. "It's either UTEP or Minnesota. Right now, it would be UTEP."

OK, so as of Sunday night, UTEP held an edge in the race. But, does Minnesota have a chance? "Minnesota is in there. It's just a matter of how my family feels about it and then I'll come up with a final decision.

"I'm just weighing out the factors of distance and the weather. Is Minnesota too cold or is Texas too hot? The coaching factors have been taken care of; it's just the little things now.

At one point, Kindred had been hearing from Michigan State, Georgia Tech, Providence and Temple, but says things have cooled recently. "For a second, the recruiting was heavy and then it got a little light. I guess everyone started getting their players."

Back in Compton, Kindred's high school team has another new coach, its second since the departure of Russell Otis. Mac Calvin has been tabbed as the head coach of the Dons and some of the players departed for other schools. "The team isn't what it used to be," Kindred said. "It's not a national powerhouse but we are contenders in California, not nationally though. We have a young team."
