Rodrigues hails from Brazil and is in his second season playing for Laurinburg Institute under the direction of Rolando DeLaBerrera. On Thursday, Rodrigues put the pen to the paper and signed with Long Beach State.
"It was a good situation for him," DeLaBerrera said. "They needed him, he wants to play right away and it'll be good for him."
Since last season, Rodrigues has shown improvement to the point where he's a mid-major prospect. He's lost 30 pounds and the reduction has improved his conditioning, ball skills and mobility.
"I think he's made remarkable improvements since last year. As he improves his athleticism his game will continue to get better. They have the time to provide. They're looking for somebody to come in and play the center position. They're going to develop him and the time to play is there. It's the best of both worlds."
Long Beach State assistant coach Bill Carr was instrumental in the player's recruitment and getting a commitment out of him when he was previously thought to be a spring signee was no small task.
Rodrigues averaged 7 points last season.
