"Rifleman" Looking At Four
John Winchester, a 6-3 guard at Bonner Academy in Raleigh, N.C., is looking at four schools. He's already visited West Virginia and Tennessee. He's now hearing from Florida and Texas.
The Longhorns were there to watch him the final day of the evaluation period. Bill Donovan was scheduled to make a trip to see him and though he didn't attend the workout, he might have visited with Winchester later in the day, but we can't confirm this.
What we can tell you is that Winchester is rapidly developing into an offensive machine. The Stamford, Conn., native played last year at Bayonne (NJ) Marist before migrating south to Bonner Academy where he needs a few core classes to be ready to play next season.
Right now, he's a shooting guard with range well beyond the arc. However, that might not be the case in the future. "I'll probably start college as a two guard and then move over to play some point." There's no reason to think that he can't pull it off.
You can expect him to take on a path similar to that of former Rice star Kenny Satterfield. "SAT" played little point in high school and was a super scorer like Winchester. However, just like Winchester, he needed to get stronger and develop his point guard skills to take his game to the next level. The transformation took some time, but Satterfield adjusted well.
Winchester is already starting to develop the needed skills and instincts to play the position. Meanwhile, he's a pretty good at lighting up the scoreboards.
