2005 Focus: Brian McTear

Brian McTear, a 5-10 point guard from Los Angeles, says he'd like to leave the west. Two schools from the Big East and Pac-10 are among his early leaders...

Brian McTear, 5-10 JR PG Los Angeles (Calif.) Crenshaw, is a pure point with a terrific feel for the game. He's got good quickness and a solid stroke to about seventeen feet. If he gets a little bigger, and stronger, he has a good chance to play at the high major level.

We spoke with McTear last night and asked about the schools he's been hearing from to date.

"UCLA, USC, Cal, Oregon, Stanford, Kansas, St. John's, Rutgers, Oregon State, Michigan and Pepperdine," said McTear.

McTear said a few schools have been out to watch him practice. "Coach Kent from Oregon came out, also Oregon State and Pepperdine," said McTear. "Coach Jarvis from St. John's was supposed to come, but something came up and he couldn't make it."

We asked McTear if he has an early leader and he replied, "I like Rutgers and Cal right now," said McTear.

McTear said early playing time would be a significant factor in his decison. He also expressed a preference for leaving home. "I'd like to leave the area," said McTear.

McTear told us that he has a 3.1 GPA and he'll take the SAT next month.
