2003 Spotlight: Brandon Cotton

Brandon Cotton, a 6-0 guard from Detroit (MI) St. Martin DePorres, is one of the top underclassmen in the state of Michigan. A variety of college recruiters made early fall stops to watch him play during the contact period.

Big-Time Guard Attracts Attention

At the 2001 Nike All-American Camp, guard Brandon Cotton made a splash. At 6-0, 165 pounds, he's a scorer first with a variety of weapons in his arsenal.

Cotton is very explosive. He'll shoot with confidence and accuracy to 3-point range, but also brandishes a very good medium-range games, even off the bounce. His sweet jumper is complimented with a floater that he goes to on the run.

Michigan State, Michigan, Louisville, Duke and Purdue were in to see him in September. Tom Izzo and Tommy Amaker made personal appearances and you can count on each being a factor in his recruitment.

"More than likely, I'll be a point guard," Cotton said of his future college position. "I have to score a lot at my school." Last year, he did score a lot, to the tune of 21 points a game for St. Martin DePorres.

Academically, Cotton is focused. "I think I'm in the 3.0 range this marking period," Cotton said. He also hasn't been fazed by the attention he's drawn. "I figured it was going to happen. You have to perform every night."

Next year, you'll see Cotton running on the Nike traveling team circuit and he's going to play for Speedy Walker's Michigan-based The Family AAU program.
