Asumnu Picks Volunteers
One of the best fifth-year players in the country reached a decision.
Stanley Asumnu is headed to Tennessee, according Hargrave coach Mike Preston. He selected Tennessee over New Mexico and Texas. Wisconsin and Oklahoma offered last year as well and were showing interest.
The Volunteers landed Asumnu without the benefit of having him on campus for an official visit. UT used the groundwork it had laid with Asumnu the previous year to help them gain the commitment.
"He was very comfortable with the coaches," Preston said. "They recruited him when coach Peterson was at Tulsa."
Tennessee is now finished its recruiting for the 2002 class. The Volunteers will sign Asumnu, point guard CJ Watson, shooting guard John Winchester, forward Justin Albrecht and center Boomer Herndon. That's a very nice class and includes no less than three Top 100 type high school players.
