Tourney Recap: Slam Dunk, ANI & More

With a handful of big-time tournaments on display this past week, we give you the rundown of who came out on top from all across the nation.

With plenty of action taking place around the nation, it's time to take a look at what happened with some of the other tournaments.

Slam Dunk to the Beach (Del.)

Dwight Howard really doesn't need much help.

Howard, the consensus top player in the land and probably the No. 1 overall pick in next year's NBA Draft, scored 26 points and grabbed 21 boards in a 71-65 win against Reserve Christian (La.) in the title game of the Slam Dunk to the Beach bracket.

Howard averaged 24.7 points, 22 boards and 6.3 blocks in three games in Delaware. Sophomore point guard Demond Carter and George Brazos each scored 16 for Reserve Christian, which pulled upsets against Westchester (Calif.) and Rainier Beach (Wash.) to earn a spot in the title game.

National Academy Invitational (Texas)

Home-court advantage paid off in Houston.

Local team Milby High (Texas), with its star senior Jawann McClellan (Arizona), knocked off national power Fairfax (Calif.) in the title game.

McClellan scored 25 points, grabbed 13 boards and had seven assists in a 80-53 rout over Fairfax and its UCLA-bound swingman Josh Shipp, who was held to just 15 points.

Junior power forward Jamal Boykin had 14 points and 14 boards in a losing cause for Harvey Kitani's club.

Mater Dei (Calif.) had no problem getting past Montrose Christian (Md.) in the consolation game. Oregon State-bound senior Marcel Jones scored 30 points, including five trifectas, in the win.

In the local bracket, Kingwood got balanced scoring in a 65-61 win against Daniel Gibson's Jesse Jones High squad. Wes Christensen finished with 16 points and five boards for Kingwood while Gibson had 23 in the losing effort.

GlaxoSmithKline Holiday Basketball Tournament (N.C.),

We've already got a story on the main page, but here's a quick recap.

Oak Hill Academy (Va.) won its fifth Glaxo crown with a 71-61 victory against previously unbeaten Cincinnati Moeller (Ohio).

Josh Smith earned MVP honors after scoring 20 points in the title game while teammate Rajon Rondo added 22 points and Brian Johnson (Louisville) chipped in with 16 points and 11 boards. N.C. State-bound forward Andrew Brackman led Moeller with 20.

Georgetown Prep (D.C.) got 20 points and 15 boards from 7-2 center Roy Hibbert (Georgetown) in a 59-50 victory over Sheldon (Calif.) in the consolation game. Duke-bound guard DeMarcus Nelson finished with 14 for Sheldon.

Beach Ball Classic (S.C.),

Darius Washington scored 24 points and earned MVP honors as Edgewater (Fla.) knocked off Cardinal Dougherty (Pa.) in the title game, 66-61.

Brandon Johnson added 13 and Quincy Thornton finished with 10 points and 10 boards. Dougherty was led by DeSean White (Providence), who had 24 points and 10 rebounds.

Cedar Hill (Texas) defeated Rufus King (Wis.), 71-58, in the consolation game as Jason Horton (Missouri) scored 20 points and had five assists. Dupree Fletcher finished with 13 to lead Rufus King.

Other Tourney News

Chris Lofton hit a shot at the buzzer to force overtime and he finished with 32 points as Mason County (11-0) defeated Lexington Catholic, 84-81, in the Fifth Third Bank Kentucky Holiday Classic.

Lofton knocked down 6-of-12 shots from beyond the arc. Harrison Morton led Lexington catholic with 25 points and 11 boards.

St. Anthony's will play unbeaten El Camino (13-0), the defending champs, in the title game of the Torrey Pines Holiday Prep Classic. Barney Anderson led Bob Hurley's team with 13 points in a 65-45 win over Flanagan in the semis while El Camino advanced thanks to a buzzer-beater from Brad Alkazin in a 66-65 victory against Compton Dominguez in the semifinals.

White Station (Tenn.) will face Bradley Central (Tenn.) in the title game of the Arby's Classic. Kellon Pickel led Bradley Central with 20 points and Justin Hare added 13 in a 65-57 win over Giles County. White Station knocked off the Baptist College of Puerto Rico and it's 7-3 center Peter Ramos, 66-44, in a physical semifinal game in which Courtney Pigram scored 14 points and J.P. Prince added 13. Ramos finished with 17 points and 10 boards for the Puerto Rico squad.

Simon Gratz (Pa.), led by unsigned senior Mark Tyndale's 33 points, knocked off Rice to win the DWI Tournament in Binghamton, N.Y.
