Winthrop Adds Four Recruits

Gregg Marshall and Winthrop are finished recruiting this year. The Eagles have their four commitments for the year.

Winthrop Lands Four

Gregg Marshall's program has been to three straight NCAA Tournaments with their eyes on a fourth. The Rock Hill, S.C.-based program has taken care of recruiting early and is the owner of four commitments from the current class.

The cornerstone of the class appears to be 6-8, 235 pound power forward Kwbana Beckles. Last season, Beckles averaged 12 points and 8 rebounds for Palm Beach (FL) Junior College. He'll be counted on to contribute the moment he steps onto campus.

Joining him in the frontcourt will be Fayetteville (NC) Seventy-First forward Billy Houston and Kinston (NC) High power forward Herbert Hill. The two hail from a pair of the best high school programs in the Tar Heel State.

Houston averaged 13 points and 8 rebounds for a Seventy-First team, which competed for the 2001 state title, losing in the quarterfinals. Hill, 6-8, 210 pounds, averaged 12 points and 6 boards as a junior.

Gainesville (FL) Santa Fe small forward James Shuler averaged 16 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists.

This was a pivotal recruiting year for the Eagles. They'll lose five seniors, including 3 post players so the program has a lot of talent to replenish after this season. Adding four players with good size certainly will help their cause.
