Very well-coordinated for a young big man, Stepheson has the kind of body that gets coaches excited. He's got very long arms and a frame that should easily add weight and muscle. He's got good feet and hands, and shows signs that he'll be able to play both inside and away from the basket. He handles and passes well for a young big, with a decent touch to about 12-15 feet. He's also an active defender, who challenges just about every shot in the paint.
We spoke with Stepheson last night and asked for some early thoughts on his recruitment.
"I like the Pac-10 and ACC," said Stepheson. "I just visited UCLA unofficially -- I like UCLA a lot. It's close to home, I like the players they're recruiting from L.A. and I like their style of play."
We asked Stepheson if he had been to any other schools yet and he replied, "I've visited USC unofficially and I just went to Michigan a couple weeks ago for my sister's graduation, so I took a visit while I was there and met the coaches. And I'll be taking an unofficial visit to Cal in a month or so for a ceremony where they'll be honoring Jason Kidd."
We asked Stepheson if he had given any thought to the issues he'd be considering when making his choice.
"I'd kind of like to stay close to home," said Stepheson. "My parents would like to see me stay close, but they mainly want me to make a good decision -- whatever is right for me. I'd also like to go somewhere where there is a player ahead of me that I can learn from. If I got a little time as a freshman, that'd be good, and then maybe play more in my second year."
Stepheson said he doesn't plan on making a decision anytime soon. "I'll probably be ready after my junior year," said Stepheson. "Maybe in the spring or summer after my junior year."
Stepheson told us that his GPA is currently around 3.0.
