Anteaters Get a Good One

Darren Fells was widely heralded on the AAU circuit, but we think the 6-6 power forward will be a very nice player in the Big West...

One look at Darren Fells, 6-6 SR PF Fullerton (Calif.) High, and you can see why college football coaches found him intriguing. He's built like a tight end/defensive end and he moves very well. Fortunately for UC Irvine, though, Fells decided he wanted to play basketball exclusively in college.

We watched Fells lead Fullerton to a 47-36 win over Troy last night and we came away very impressed with the young big man. Fells made every big play down the stretch for Fullerton, including a huge three-pointer to put Fullerton ahead at 35-34.

In a slow-paced game, Fells finished with twelve points and six rebounds. Not amazing numbers, to be sure, but we like Fells' combination of size, toughness and skill level. He's very good in the low-post when he gets someone on his back, but he can also face-up in the mid-post or all the way to the stripe. We hadn't seen that kind of range from Fells in the summer and it really adds another dimension to his game.

With continued development, we look for Fells to be a mainstay in the Irvine lineup and possibly an All-Conference level player down the road.
