Haas To Stanford
Mike Montgomery's search for a backup point guard is over. The Cardinal had to go to Blairstown (NJ) Blair Academy to find their man. State College, Penn., native Jason Haas committed to Stanford on Monday.
The 6-2 Haas committed to Stanford over offers from Princeton and Davidson. Last year at Penn Valley, Haas averaged 24 points a game. He's a great student and fifth-year prep.
"To be honest, he was looking for the best basketball and academic situation and if you aren't getting recruited by Duke, then Stanford's it," Blair coach Joe Mantegna said. "I [the Cardinal] are looking for Jason to be a recruited guy who will be given a chance knowing he's a class behind [Chris Hernandez]. He has a huge challenge in front of him to be able to get into the playing group."
One of the advantages Haas will have over other freshmen is that he is a year older. A full-qualifier and then some coming out of high school, Haas is using a fifth-year to improve his game and it's already helped his recruitment.
"He's got a tremendous basketball IQ," Mantegna said. "He's probably the best passer I've been around. Jason can score too. I don't know if he can score at that level right away but he's put up big numbers. He's a year older doing a PG year. His adjustment will be seamless."
