TheInsiders.com Top 10 Prep Poll

With a big weekend looming at the beginning of February in Rhode Island at the National Prep Invitational, things are starting to take shape in the world of prep school hoops. As usual, there was some significant movement in this week's Top 10 National Poll.

1.  HARGRAVE MILITARY ACADEMY (VA.)
Record:13-1
Comments:After a loss to Bridgton in mid-December, Kevin Keatts & Co. dropped out of the top spot. However, five straight wins after the holiday break have them back at numero uno. Dayton-bound forward Norm Plummer scored 19 points and hit the game-winner with five seconds left against Laurinburg.
2.  WINCHENDON (MASS.)
Record:13-2
Comments:No one is playing better right now than Mike Byrnes' group. They've taken care of St. Thomas More, Brewster, ND Prep, New Hampton and Bridgton after the break. Dominique White has done a great job running the show and Donovan Morris has picked up his game of late. Morris averaged 21.4 ppg in the five wins.
3.  BRIDGTON ACADEMY (MAINE)
Record:16-3
Comments:Whit Lesure's club was No. 1 for just one poll after losing games to South Kent and Winchendon in the past week. Indiana-bound Robert Vaden had 34 at Winchendon, but it wasn't enough. Bridgton did post a 30-point win over New Hampton and beat MCI since returning after break.
4.  ST. THOMAS MORE (CONN.)
Record:13-5
Comments:Jere Quinn & Co. lost in the title game of their own tourney to South Kent and dropped a game at Winchendon, but have won the other five since coming back - including two wins against New Hampton and victories over MCI and Tabor. Sophomore Rob Thomas had 20 points against Tabor and 25 vs. Navy Prep.
5.  NOTRE DAME PREP (MASS.)
Record:18-4
Comments:Bill Barton's club has struggled of late, losing games to Our Savior, Winchendon and Northfield Mount Hermon. However, their schedule is brutal. They've played just three games at home. Kojo Mensah had 21 in a 108-101 win at South Kent and also had 15 in a 69-65 setback to Our Savior.
6.  BREWSTER ACADEMY (N.H.)
Record:10-2
Comments:Jason Smith has done a nice job thus far, but we'd like to see him step up his schedule a bit instead of beating up on the Hyde's and Cushing's over the world. They lost a close one to Winchendon, 102-96, at home. Adrian Joseph (Virginia) scored 17 in the loss and had 26 in a win over Phillips Exeter.
7.  LAURINBURG INSTITUTE (N.C.)
Record:19-5
Comments:Lacking a true point guard has really hurt Chris Chaney this year. Vincent Banks (Cincinnati) is back from a hernia injury and Laurinburg nearly knocked off top-ranked Hargrave. Missed free throws by Banks, Joe McCray and Richard Dorsey in the final minute were the difference in a 85-84 loss. C.J. Anderson had a team-high 19 points.
8.  PHILADELPHIA LUTHERAN (PA.)
Record:18-1
Comments:Don't be confused because these guys have an "A" and a "B" team. The top squad for Darryl Schofield has posted wins over Laurinburg and Our Savior - and a pair of victories against both Life Center and Redemption Christian. Guards Maureece Rice and big men Vernon Goodridge have been excelling.
9.  FORK UNION (VA.)
Record:15-2
Comments:Six straight wins after the break keep Fetcher Arritt's club in the Top 10. However, they will go up against ND Prep this weekend at home, rather than some of the College JV team's they've been beating up on of late.
10.  CHAMPLAIN ST. LAMBERT (CANADA)
Record:18-5
Comments:The boys from up north struggled recently at the Flyin' to the Hoop, losing a pair - but they have fared well enough to remain in the top 10 for now. Junior Maurice Joseph has established himself as a high-major talent with his play in the states.
