2005 Focus: Tyler Smith

Junior small forward Tyler Smith is having one of those memorable seasons. He's been on the winning side of two big time games against Brentwood Academy. The 6-6 junior loves to play.

Tyler Smith of Pulaski (TN) Giles Co. has done nothing but impress in his junior season. He's coming off a big summer with Mark Komara's Southeast Pump ‘n Run squad. He was an all-star at ABCD Camp and he's headed down that route again.

For Giles Co., he's averaging 22 points and 9 rebounds. He owns a pair of wins in games against Brentwood Academy and star sophomore Brandon Wright.

"That's why I like to play," Smith said of the battles. "We don't see too many players come through our gym that we play that are ranked in the nation. It's good to go head-to-head with another player ranked as high as you are."

Despite being a Top 15 player in his class, Smith knows there are still areas to work on. "My jumpshot hasn't come around yet but it's getting there. The mid-range is coming along, so will the 3-pointer.

"I go out there and play hard. I was trying too hard at the beginning of the season. I had a big summer and I was going out there trying to impress. I had to calm down."

Recently, Smith took an unofficial visit to Tennessee that went extremely well. Kansas is another spot he'd like to see. "I wouldn't mind taking a visit to Kansas. I'm still open. I'll try to take as many unofficial visits as I can."

Smith was going to take an unofficial to Kentucky this weekend however, he's got a game tonight and opted to stay home. Who else does he like? "I want to go [unofficially] to North Carolina, Duke, UCLA, Wisconsin, Oklahoma, Florida, Louisville and Kentucky."
