Hammonds Commits to ACC Program

Cliff Hammonds was debating between football and basketball. In the end, he'll play hoops in the ACC.

Cairo High (Ga.) 6-2, 175-pound senior point guard Cliff Hammonds will commit to Clemson later this week.

Hammonds, a two-sport star who is averaging 23 points, 8 boards and 5.5 assists per game, was contemplating taking an official visit to Stanford, but he decided that it was too far.

``I think it's Clemson, but I'll make my decision by the end of the week," Hammonds said.

``I went there for an official visit on Jan. 25, when they played Maryland," he added. "I really enjoyed the trip. The whole staff was nice and it seems like they're a program headed in the right direction."

According to a source close to the situation, Hammonds has already notified the Clemson staff of the upcoming decision. In addition to Stanford, Hammonds also considered Mercer - where his brother is a freshman on the basketball team.

Hammonds, a 4.0 student, considered signing a football scholarship with Wake Forest. Now he'll have to wait at least two years before he can play football in college.
