TheInsiders.com Top 10 Prep Poll

The end of the prep school season is rapidly approaching and after the Prep School Invitational earlier this month, it seems like there are more questions than answers. Parity is the word that comes to mind when talking prep hoops this year.

Kevin Keatts has his loaded Hargrave team in the top spot and Notre Dame Prep, Winchendon and Bridgton are all really close at Nos 3, 4 or 5. After that, the picture is somewhat unclear.

1.  HARGRAVE MILITARY ACADEMY (VA.)
Record:22-1
Comments:Ever since a loss to Bridgton Academy in mid-December, these guys have run the table. It's been mostly JV teams that have been the victime of late, but Kevin Keatts' group did take care of Coastal Christian, 91-77, behind Dayton-bound forward Norman Plummer's 33 points and 12 boards.
2.  NOTRE DAME PREP (MASS.)
Record:27-5
Comments:These guys have won four of their five games on the road and have beaten both Winchendon and Bridgton on a neutral court. Kojo Mensah led a balanced scoring with 13 in a 63-50 win over Bridgton at the National Prep Invitational. Bill Barton's club also went to Fork Union and swept Fletcher Arritt's club in two games.
3.  BRIDGTON ACADEMY (MAINE)
Record:24-4
Comments:We're giving Whit Lesure's club the nod at No. 3 over Winchendon because of a victory at the MCI Tournament on a neutral court. Robert Vaden (Indiana) has been terrific, scoring 29 in a 90-70 home win against ND Prep and pouring in 38 - including 8 trifectas - in a victory at Brewster.
4.  WINCHENDON (MASS.)
Record:22-5
Comments:Donovan Morris and Stuard Baldonado have come on strong of late. Morris had 22 in a win against New Hampton and earned MVP honors at the New Hampton Tournament. Jesus Verdejo finished with 32 in a 93-81 victory over Lawrenc Academy. Have won 6 of last 7 with only loss coming against Laurinburg.
5.  BREWSTER ACADEMY (N.H.)
Record:16-5
Comments:Jason Smith's squad is coming off a pair of quality neutral-court wins - one a 77-74 victory over St. Thomas More in which Washington-bound Joel Smith hit the game-winner as time expired and the other a 93-78 win against South Kent at the New Hampton Tournament in which Joel Smith finished with 30 points and 12 boards.
6.  LAURINBURG INSTITUTE (N.C.)
Record:24-6
Comments:It's been a disappointing season for Chris Chaney & Co., but he's still managed neutral-court wins over Bridgton and Winchendon and also knocked off Philly Lutheran twice in three tries. Vincent Banks (Cincinnati) had 20 in the rout over Winchendon at the National Prep Invitational and Joe McCray had 18 in a 20-point win over MCI.
7.  PHILADELPHIA LUTHERAN (PA.)
Record:20-2
Comments:Other than a pair of losses to Laurinburg, Darryl Schoefield's club has been perfect. Sophomore Stefan Jackson had 26 and guard Marvin Kilgore added 19 in a loss to Laurinburg at the National Prep Invitational.
8.  LAWRENCEVILLE PREP (N.J.)
Record:21-4
Comments:A newcomer to the poll. Ron Kane's group has knocked off Blair Academy twice. They were also the only team in the country to take care of St. Benedict's. Joakim Noah (Florida) has been terrifric all season.
9.  NORTHFIELD MOUNT HERMON (MASS.)
Record:18-4
Comments:These guys have rolled off a dozen straight games after struggling somewhat early in the season. Dorien Brown had 20 and Tony Gaffney and Colin McIntosh each added 19 in a 94-92 win over MCI at the National Prep Invitational. Boris Meno had 20 & 12 in a 20-point win over South Kent.
10.  ST. THOMAS MORE (CONN.)
Record:18-8
Comments:Jere Quinn & Co. have eight losses, but they play a brutal schedule and are rewarded by staying in the Top 10. Sophomore forward Rob Thomas continues to flourish and Reggie Bates has come on of late. They have lost 2 of the last 3.
