Fall or Spring Decision?
Rashi Johnson, a native of Chicago, is the point guard at Mott Community College. He's receiving recruiting attention from a number of schools including Michigan State, Southern Cal, NC State, Oklahoma and Auburn.
"Initially, the plan was for him to sign in the late period but recently there's been pressure to get it done early," Mott head coach Steve Schmidt said. "Michigan State is the leader. USC has done a great job and NC State is trying to make up ground. Oklahoma has inquired and Auburn's been there too."
Johnson's big dilemma right now is timing. He hasn't made an official visit yet, but would like to do so. However, his season has started and the signing period is coming up in the near future. Will he wait until the spring as was the initial plan or will he sign in the fall?
"We are going to have to sit down and decide what direction we are going in," Schmidt said. "Things can change in the very near future." Michigan State's campus is 45 minutes from Mott and they have the advantage having him on campus for an unofficial visit.
The former Chicago King guard is very explosive and strong. "He's physical and can shoot and create opportunities," Schmidt said. "He's very skilled and a hard-nosed defensive-type kid."
This season will be the Johnson's first at Mott where his primary responsibility is running the point. However, after having a successful season last year and excelling in some juco events, Schmidt is confident he's the right man for the job and can be a fine player at that position at the next level.
