Hargrave Ends Season On Top

Hargrave Military Academy closed out its season with a championship at the First Piedmont Invitational. In his return to the prep school ranks, Kevin Keatts and Hargrave staked their claim as the top prep school team in the nation.

Hargrave Military Academy concluded its season with a 10-point win over Notre Dame Prep at the First Piedmont Invitational. The victory marked Hargrave's 25th win of the year against just one setback. More importantly, the win allows Hargrave to stake its claim as the best prep school team in the land.

"There's no tournament at the end of the year," Keatts said. "But, you have to play all those guys. We started No. 2 in the preseason and my kids were a little offended by it and finished strong and we were the best team."

In the championship game against Notre Dame Prep, Lorenzo Wade led the way with 20 points as Hargrave won 92-82. Five Hargrave players scored in double figures. Center Darian Townes went for 19, guard Isaiah Swann had 14 and Stanley Burrell and Emanuel Willis split 24.

"I think Bill Barton and those guys do a heckuva job. That was a good team we played."

Like Keatts said, there is no tournament to determine the prep school champ, but Hargrave's resume stands on its own. Bridgton Academy was the lone school to knock off Hargrave and that happened in December. Since then, Hargrave was perfect and even knocked off Laurinburg in a showcase came at the Greensboro Coliseum in January.

Last season, Keatts was an assistant at Marshall. His return to the prep school ranks put Hargrave back amongst the powers in post-graduate play. "I think it was definitely exciting but it made it easy for me just to have a good group of kids. We had some kids who were committed to the program and it made my first year [back] smooth."
