2003 Spotlight: David Padgett

Reno, Nev., junior power forward David Padgett is shaping up to be a key target for a number of big-time programs. His father who coaches him in high school has aided Padgett's development as a player.

Student-Athlete Has Great Options

David Padgett, a 6-9 power forward from Reno (NV) High, is one of the top prospects in the Class of 2003. Padgett played last summer for Pump ‘n Run.

During the fall evaluation period, coaches from Arizona, North Carolina, Iowa, California, Stanford, Kentucky, Missouri and UNLV made pit stops to see him. Mike Montgomery and Lute Olson made it their business to personally watch him. "I think those two will definitely be in my top four or five," Padgett said.

Padgett is one of those kids who will receive priority attention from the schools recruiting him and you can bet some programs will try and push for an early decision. He doesn't feel like it's too early to look at schools. "About a year ago, I might have thought that," Padgett said. "I don't think it's too early now anymore."

Padgett credits his father with really helping him to get his game together. "Last year, our season didn't go as well as it should. My game got a lot better as the spring and summer went on. My dad is my high school coach and he was the assistant at UC Santa Barbara last year. When he came that just changed my whole game around."

He averaged 19 points, 14 rebounds and 4 blocks as a sophomore. He's a standout in the classroom with a 3.4 GPA.
