Traveling Team: D.C. Blue Devils

A year ago, the D.C. Blue Devils had more talent on their second unit than most squad's had on their top five guys. This year they won't have quite as much talent, but Rob Jackson's team will still have guys like Kevin Durant, Mike Freeman, Eric Price and Tywon Lawson.

Last year the D.C. Blue Devils were so loaded to start the spring that their second unit could have more than held its own against most other teams around the country. However, many of the big-names never really played during the summer and the ones that did play just didn't gel together quite as well as expected.

This year Rob Jackson won't have the Isaiah Swann's, James Gist's and Brian Johnson's of the world, but he hopes that the chemistry makes them a better group.

``Last year we didn't live up to expectations at all," Jackson said. "I was loaded with frontline players, but in the summer, guards dominate – and this year, we have dynamite guards."

The backcourt will feature Blair Academy (N.J.) point guard Eric Price and 5-10 sophomore sensation Tywon Lawson, who excelled this past season at McNamara in Md.

``I think he's a lot like Chris Duhon," National Christian (Md.) 6-8 sophomore Kevin Durant said of Lawson. "He can take over, he can pass and he's a great floor leader."

Durant, a versatile forward who can knock down the 3-pointer and also take it strong to the basket, will be the focal point of the offense and lead the way up front. Mike Freeman, a 6-8 junior who played this past season at Hayfield High (Va.) after transferring from Montrose Christian, will likely start at power forward while Notre Dame Academy (Va.) 6-11 junior Lucas Stien should get the call in the middle.

Gwynn Park's Corey Allmond will give the team some depth and penetration ability off the bench in the backcourt – and South Lakes (Va.) 6-3 ½ sharpshooter Ryan Scott should bring in instant offense. Matt Hewson, a 7-1 junior from Virginia, should give the team another big body.

``We're totally different than a year ago," Jackson said. "We have better guards and our frontcourt will be fine with Lucas and Matt. We have at least two high-major Division 1 kids with Kevin and Tywon." ``A lot of teams will probably underestimate us because of our size," Durant added. "Last year's team was huge, but our guards will be really good and I think that will be important."
