Traveling Team: Friends of Hoop (Wash.)

Martell Webster will be out of action until Memorial Day, but Friends of Hoop is more than just about Martell. These guys are all about teamwork and chemistry.

Last year it was Rotary Select that was the loaded team out of Seattle. This year it'll more than likely be Jim Marsh's Friends of Hoop program.

Rotary Select had Marvin Williams a year ago. Friends of Hoop will have its own superstar, Martell Webster.

Webster, who is still recovering from a dislocated fibula in his right foot, is hoping to make his first appearance of the spring during Memorial Day weekend in New Orleans.

Even without the 6-6 Webster, these guys will still be tough to beat. They core of the team has been playing together for four or five years and they have plenty of talent.

Snohomish High 6-8, 250-pound hard-nosed power forward Jon Brockman is getting plenty of high-major looks and is a force in the paint. O'Dea's 6-1 ½ junior floor leader Mitch Johnson is a smart, heady floor leader who does a good job of getting everyone involved.

``Mitch really does a great job directing traffic," Marsh said. "He's just got a terrific basketball IQ. Mitch, Jon and Martell have been playing together since they were 12 years old and those guys, as well as the rest of our players, always bust their butts."

Micah Downs is a 6-8 scorer from Bothell High and he'll be joined by 6-10, 215-pound sophomore big man Spencer Hawes in the starting lineup.

Sharpshooter Ryan Staudacher, a 6-3, 185-pound junior out of Lake Washington High, will see plenty of action off the bench. Tommy Craddock, a 6-8 junior who also excels in football and baseball, and freshman point guard Jamelle McMillan, Nate McMillan's son, will also make contributions.

``We've got good balance inside and outside," Johnson said. "We have a lot of guys who could end up being the leading scorer or rebounder. We don't really have one player that we need to depend on to score 25 points a game."

``We just need to play up to our ability and play smart," added Webster. "This is our last year and we just need to make sure that guys don't worry about their personal stats – and just want to win. I don't think that will be a problem, though, since we have such good team chemistry and everyone sees eye to eye on the team."
