Mathis Has Change of Heart

Troy Mathis had a change of heart. A couple weeks ago, he committed to USC during a visit out west - but he really wanted to play in the ACC.

A couple of weeks ago, Troy Mathis committed to USC during a visit to Los Angeles. After thinking it over, the high-scoring Laurinburg (N.C.) senior guard decided he wanted to play in the ACC.

``I realized I only had one life and this is my dream, to play in the ACC," Mathis said. "I'm going for my dream. Not too many people get to grab their dream, but it's right in front of me."

Mathis gave Clemson a commitment on Tuesday after deciding that it was where his heart is.

``I think it was more of my fault," said his AAU coach/guardian, Wallace Shuler. "I'm a big Henry Bibby fan and I may have persuaded him a little bit more than I wanted to."

``He came back to me and told me he wanted to play in the ACC," added Shuler. "That's his choice. He just wants a chance to prove himself."

Mathis once scored 80 points in a game earlier this season. He's a terrific scorer from long range and can also get to the basket.

``If he learns the game to go with his natural ability, he'll become a great guard," Shuler said.
