Mikalauskas Picks ACC School

Lithuanian native Laurynas Mikalauskas is headed to the ACC. The Blue Ridge School junior big man made his decision Monday morning.

Pete Gillen and the Virginia Cavaliers moved swiftly in the recruitment of Laurynas Mikalauskas. Last Friday, the 6-7 ½ power forward visited campus unofficially with his head coach Bill Ramsey.

The visit went extremely well. Well enough that Mikalauskas made up his mind before the end of the weekend. "I told him to wait through the weekend and we'd sit down and talk it over and make it official on Monday," Ramsey said. On Monday, it was time to decide.

After offers from Virginia Tech and West Virginia were considered, he made Virginia his choice.

"There were several factors," Ramsey said. "He's real close by to Blue Ridge. He lives with my family during vacations and Christmas. He didn't want to be too far away either.

"They lose their starting line and he really feels like he's got a good chance of playing a lot as a freshman. [Virginia] did a computer rendition of the new arena for us and that's a tremendous facility. He knew they were the No. 1 public in the United States. It all just seemed to fit together."

As a junior, Mikalauskas averaged 18.5 points and 11.5 rebounds. "He knows they have a great point guard coming in."
