"It was close," Garcia said. "I liked the guys on the team and I've got the chance to play right away." Garcia was also hearing from Florida State and Georgetown.
Garcia, a talented student-athlete who speaks multiple languages and holds dual-citizenship, has been invited to compete on the Angolan Junior National team and may even participate in the Olympics with the country.
Richmond's head coach Jerry Wainright did an excellent job of convincing Garcia how bad the Spiders needed him. Garcia meanwhile, is looking forward to the experience.
"The challenge will come in the schedule versus teams like St. Joe's and Xavier. There is a challenge and that's to take the program to another level. Plus, you can only play basketball for four years but you can keep the [Richmond] education for 40 years."
Last summer Garcia was an all-star at the ABCD Camp.
