Michael Binns to A-10

Michael Binns had a chance to play near home, but he opted to stay on the east coast. The Illinois native chose to play in the Atlantic-10 next year.

Fordham was looking for a frontcourt guy who could come in and do a variety of things. Derrick Whittenburg may have found his guy in Brewster Academy (N.H.) forward Michael Binns.

The 6-7, 225-pound Illinois native, who averaged eight points and eight boards per game last season at Brewster, signed with the Rams after canceling a visit to St. Bonaventure set for this weekend.

``He's a blue-collar, hard-nosed kid," Brewster coach Jason Smith said. "He understands his role and does the dirty work. He sets screens, rebounds and has great character. He's a perfect fit for Fordham and is from Chicago, so he liked the fact of being in the city."

Binns also considered Wyoming, Loyola (Ill.), Central Connecticut, Long Island and Arizona State.

``The academics are really good, so my parents loved that," Binns said of Fordham. "The coaches made me feel like family."
