2003 Spotlight: Richard McBride

Richard McBride wasn't himself last summer. He didn't resemble the same guy projected to be a Top 10 player in his class shortly after his freshman season. However, he's doing much better now.

McBride Wants To Decide Early

Having seen Springfield (IL) Lanphier guard Richard McBride play plenty of times prior to the summer of 2001, I can say that his performance wasn't in line with his talent level.

"I gained too much weight," McBride said. "When I went to Boo I had a foot injury and I didn't tell anyone. I didn't play well and [Larry] Butler didn't ask me to play with the Warriors anymore. I went to Nike Camp out of shape."

Combine the foot injury with the weight gain and an explosive guard was grounded for most of the AAU season. McBride says he's fine now and he's back on track for a follow-up season to his sophomore effort that netted him all-state honors as he averaged 15 points a game.

During the fall, only Illinois came in to watch him workout. The Sept. 11 tragedy forced Louisville to cancel a trip. McBride says he's wide open as far as schools go and has interest in the Illini, Iowa, Seton Hall, Michigan, Indiana, Cincinnati and Louisville.

"I want to make my decision early so I won't have to miss any days of school like Andre [Iguodala] did when he took his visits."
