Ayinde Ubaka, 6-2 JR PG Oakland (Calif.) High, is currently ranked #1 among point guards in the junior class on the west coast. He's very quick and has an excellent feel for the position. His shot needs a little work, but it's not bad, and he has apparently improved since we last saw him in the summer. He will be very tough to defend when he can consistently hit the outside shot.
We spoke with Ayinde yesterday and he told us that he's currently wide open. We specifically asked about a rumor that he had committed to UCLA. Ayinde laughed and said, "no, I haven't committed to UCLA."
Ayinde told us that Maryland, UCLA, Colorado and Cal all came to see him work out in September. In addition to those schools, Ayinde lists Michigan St., Gonzaga, New Mexico and Utah as schools that he's interested in.
We asked if he had a particular school he admired growing up and Ayinde said, "UCLA -- they always had a good team and I'd see them on tv."
When asked which factors whould be important to him when making his college choice, Ayinde replied, "how big the classes are, how good the team is, the weather and playing time." Ayinde went on to say, "I want to stay close to home, on the west coast, so my Mom can see me play."
Ayinde told us that Cal has been expressing a great deal of interest. "Cal's been showing me a lot of interest -- probably the most interest of any school," Ayinde said.
We asked if the commitment of Oakland Soldiers' teammate Marquis Kately to Cal would affect him, and Ayinde replied, "I'd love to play with him and Leon (Powe) if it works out that way, but I'm not making my decision on that."
Ayinde told us that he plans on taking his time with the decision and he'll probably take several trips.
