Walton's Courtship Heats Up

Travis Walton's recruitment is heating up. The Lima, Ohio, senior point guard is still waiting on some formal offers, but his list is taking shape.

Travis Walton, a 6-foot-1 point guard out of Lima (Ohio) High returned last week from camp on the campus of the University of Florida. This week, he's at Michigan State's team camp. As expected, the summer is very busy.

As far as recruiting, Walton is seeing an increase in attention. "It's heating up a little bit," Walton said. "There's more schools coming in like Cincinnati and Florida."

Walton's school list has Michigan State, Marquette, Cincinnati, Miami and Florida on it. Marquette, Duquesne and Bowling Green have offered.

Two programs seemed to have emerged as solid contenders for his services. "Probably Michigan State and Marquette; both of them are about even."

Maybe even, but not the same in terms of the situation. Tom Crean, the former Michigan State assistant, has already offered a scholarship and Walton even visited the school officially May 14; MSU has not offered … yet.

"[The Marquette visit] went real well. I got to chill with the players and coaches. I had a nice weekend. The coaching staff and how they let their guards play and the chemistry and the team seemed pretty good."

Walton is waiting on results from a standardized test and thinks those results could be tied into more interest. "I think schools are going to start offering. I just have to get my test scores right from my ACT."

A noted defender, Walton has already scored 1,000 points in high school and says that he's improved his jumpshot. The guard is quick to admit, defense remains his No. 1 strength.
