Echefu Heating Up At Right Time

Looking for a hot prospect entering the summer? Try Uche Echefu, a senior power forward out of Montrose Christian.

Uche Echefu, a 6-foot-8 power forward and native of Nigeria, is sizzling entering July. Recently, the Montrose Christian standout was named the top defensive player at a Five-Star Camp and left a positive imprint on the NBA Players Association Camp.

In our most recent Top 100, Echefu went from late Top 100 to No. 51 in America. He's got bounce, athleticism and has shown improvement in the area of his basketball IQ.

His feel for the game might be a direct result of him playing against high level players last month. He's getting a better feel, he just needs to play more," Montrose assistant David Adkins said.

Adkins sees the improvement in his player's game and is under the impression that Echefu is merely scratching the surface.

"With his sheer athleticism and the right situation and the right teachers, he can really take it to another level."

In terms of recruitment, Echefu isn't excited about making or returning phone calls from coaches. He's focused on getting better through playing and individual development. He's a young man with a bright future but where?

Among the interested parties, and it's a long list, are Virginia, Virginia Tech, Miami, Florida, Florida State, Arizona, Georgia Tech, Texas, Kentucky and Michigan.

"All of these guys want to talk to him but he's not into that. He just wants to get better. He's really overwhelmed.

"I think once he comes back from Nike, a lot more people are going to say ‘wait a minute. Unless he blows up he's going to be here for four years. He's a good student too."

We'll check back with Echefu in a few weeks. Until then, he's a name to watch as a likely July riser on the camp scene.
