Blue Hens Land 7-1 Center

The Delaware Blue Hens recently secured a commitment from a 7-foot-1 prospect out of Virginia. Last week, Matt Hewson attended the Nike Camp and then reached his decision.

Matt Hewson, a 7-foot-1, 200 pound big man out of Woodbridge (Va.) Hylton, picked the Delaware Blue Hens on Monday afternoon. As a junior, he averaged 8 points, 8 rebounds and 8 blocks.

What attracted Hewson to Delaware was the work the Blue Hens did with current center Raphael Madera. "I though [Raphael] Madera was big," Hewson said. "I saw him recently and he was all muscle. I thought that if they could do that for him then they could really help me."

Clearly Hewson is going to have to put on some weight. He's got a nice skill set, as he displayed as a mid-major prospect at Nike, he's just going to have to add weight to help him stand his ground in the post.

Hewson began his junior season slowly but once the state tournament came around he felt like he was hitting his stride. At this point, he's thinking that he'll play as a freshman, in fact, that's why he picked a Colonial Conference program after looking at BYU and George Mason.

"I don't think I'll have to redshirt there," Hewson said. "That's one of the reasons why I went there. That's why I looked at a mid-major."

The last seven-footer to play for the Blue Hens was Spencer Dunkley in the early 90's. Dunkley eventually was selected No. 51 by the Pacers.
