Malone Finds A Home In C-USA

Marcus Malone was just about ready to settle in and head to the East Coast for prep school. And then … he received a test score good enough to get him into school this year and he's off to college.

Marcus Malone, a 6-foot-4 guard out of Compton (Calif.) Dominguez, has had a whirlwind week. For a guy who had resigned himself to the notion that he wasn't going to play college ball this fall, things sure changed in a hurry.

On Wednesday, Malone (Class of 2004) committed to play for Dave Leitao's DePaul Blue Demons.

"This is the most crazy situation I've ever been in," Malone said. "First I didn't think I passed the SAT and was looking forward to prep school. It's been a crazy week."

Malone, who had interest from Georgetown and an offer from the Houston Cougars, officially visited DePaul this week and committed during the visit. Had he not received a qualifying test score in June, he would have gone to Coastal Christian in Virginia Beach, Va.

Malone looks forward, maybe more than most incoming seniors because of his roller coaster ride, to playing college ball.

"I think defense first, so I bring a lot of defense to the table. I like to stick the other team's best player. On offense, I pass first and when my turn comes I try to do my thing a little bit."

DePaul scouted Malone in the spring, kept in touch as he played with the I-Can All-Stars in the summer and moved quickly once he achieved a qualifying test score.
