Tron Smith, 6-2 JR PG Cajon (Calif.) High, is not well known nationally but he ranks among the top point guards in the west. Smith is well put together, with good quickness and hops, and a very good outside shot. He needs to work on his decision-making and ability to create for others, but he has a significant upside.

We spoke with Smith yesterday after his game at the Tournament of Champions. He told us that he's been hearing primarily from Arizona St., USC, Miami and Yale so far.

Asked if he had a leader, Smith replied, "Arizona State. I'm very close with Jason Braxton -- I used to live with him and his family. I want to go to Arizona State if I can." Tron went on to say, "If it doesn't work out with ASU, then USC would be my next choice."

Smith said that he would like to make an early decision. "I want to commit as early as possible and get it over with."

Playing time is a consideration for Smith. "I want to be able to get some minutes," Smith said. "Not necessarily start, but I'd like to be able to play and get better."

We asked if his preference for ASU or USC meant that he'd like to stay in the west. "Not really," Smith said. "I don't care about going away."

Smith told us that he has a 2.8 GPA and will take the SAT at the end of the season.
