Sylvester Mayes Headed to Big Ten

Sylvester Mayes took a pair of visits before canceling a third. He didn't need to see if the third was a charm, since he made a commitment after this past weekend's visit.

Thad Matta is trying to build something in Columbus and he landed one piece with Sylvester Mayes.

The 6-1, 195-pound Indiana native, who will spend his second season at Redlands Junior College (Okla.), committed to Ohio State after a visit this past weekend.

``He's a scorer and a tough kid who has really improved his defensive intensity," Redlands coach Steve Eck said. "He's got a really good mid-range game, which you don't find a lot."

``He can handle the ball, but he's more of a two-guard," added Eck.

Mayes also took a visit to UNLV and canceled one to Indiana. Purdue, Houston, Texas, Texas A&M and Charlotte had all expressed interest at one time or another.

Mayes averaged 14.2 points last season at Redlands.
