Worcester Wins NY Boys' Club Holiday Tournament
Unbeaten Worcester Academy rolled over Lawrenceville Academy (NJ), 78-58, and then nipped Northfield Mount Hermon (MA), 54-53, at the buzzer to vault into the championship game of the 16-team New York City Boys' Club HolidayTournament. The 8-0 Hilltoppers then beat Blair Academy (NJ), 75-70 for the second time in less then a week to win the prestigious prep school title. It was a historical weekend in many ways as the team played three games in two days, and got a first hand look at the devastation and aftermath of the September 11th tragedy.
WA 78 - Lawrenceville 58
In the first game Craig Smith topped all scorers with 32 points, while Daryl Pegram had 11, and Sam Kaplan checked in with 9 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 blocked shots.
WA 53 - NMH 52
With Northfield Mount Hermon leading, 53-52, and the clock running down, Wes Wardrop pulled up and hit a jumper with no time remaining to pull out the nightcap. Craig Smith had 13 points, Jarrett Jack 11 and Sam Kaplan 7 rebounds for Worcester.
WA 75 - Blair 70
In the final game, Daryl Pegram hit five 3-point shots in the second half to lift Worcester Academy to a 75-70 win over Blair Academy, giving the Hilltoppers the New York City Boys Club Tournament championship. After taking a 41-40 lead at the half, Worcester Academy had to battle back from an eight- point deficit in the fourth quarter for the win. It was the second time in less than a week that the Hilltoppers have beaten Blair.

His son Brendan is a senior at Worcester. … Kaka Ekezie, a senior at Worcester, is the brother of Clippers power forward Obinna Ekezie, a former Maryland star. … Detroit Pistons head coach Rick Carlisle is a Worcester (Class of 1979) grad. … Associate head coach Donny Nelson of the Dallas Mavericks is also a Worcester (‘82) grad. … Michael Malone, an assistant with the New York Knicks, graduated from Worcester in 1989.
