Young To Play In Big East

Sam Young, one of the best combo forwards in the prep ranks, is off the board. The Washington, D.C., native wasted little time in picking his new school.

One of the premier players on the Hargrave basketball roster is no longer uncommitted. Sam Young, a 6-foot-5 ½ combo forward visited and committed to the Pittsburgh Panthers this weekend.

"They had recruited him last year when he was at Friendly," Hargrave coach Kevin Keatts said. "When he didn't qualify they recruited him here at Hargrave."

Young is one of those undersized guys who approaches the game with a chip on his shoulder and that makes him extremely tough. Athletically he's extremely gifted. Pittsburgh has enjoyed considerable success with players like him in the past.

Keatts saw Pittsburgh as an excellent fit for his player. "I think obviously his biggest strength is his athletic ability and his ability to score. He scores more inside now than outside but I think down the road Sam has the opportunity to play the [small forward] in college." The Panthers recruited him with the plan of making him a small forward upon his arrival.

In typical Young fashion, he's left his mark on Keatts from day one at Hargrave. "The thing that I've been impressed with Sam is that he's competed every day since he's gotten here. He's given 110% each day that he enters the gym."

Virginia Tech, Miami, Georgetown, Georgia, Penn State and George Washington each recruited Young.
