Horton's Smokin' First Half Sets The Tone
Daniel Horton came to play. The Cedar Hill guard took 10 3-point shots in the first half of the championship game against Germantown Academy. He made 6 of them and Cedar Hill built a 40-29 halftime lead that was never threatened.
Cedar Hill won the ballgame 76-52 to become the third straight team from Texas to win the coveted Slam Dunk To The Beach trophy. Willowridge, with stars like TJ Ford and Daniel Ewing, won the two previous Slam trophies for Texas.
GA's "Big Three" of Matt Walsh, Lee Melchionni and Ted Skuchas scored 15, 14 and 12 respectively. GA seemed to have something working with Skuchas, the biggest man on the floor early, but the advantage didn't materialize. Cedar Hill's shorter and faster post men Kelvin Williams and Cedric Brooks, did a nice job on him in the post.
In fact, Williams and Brooks did a nice job all tournament long. Williams scored 12 and had a game-high 11 rebounds in the final.
The night belonged to Daniel Horton. The McDonald's candidate rose to the occasion and showed that like most great players, he knows how to answer the call when it's his turn. Texas has great talent like Chris Bosh, Bracey Wright, Brad Buckman and Bryan Hopkins. Each is making a bid for the Burger game. Horton made his case on Saturday and it was a pretty good one.
This concludes our coverage from the Slam Dunk To The Beach. Hope you enjoyed it!
