Onuaku Goes Big East

Arinze Onuaku is off the board. The 6-foot-9 block of granite out of Alexandria (Va.) Episcopal reached his decision Monday evening.

The Syracuse Orangemen now have a three-man recruiting class. Arinze Onuaku, a center out of Episcopal in Virginia who starred with D.C. Assault last summer, committed to the Syracuse Orangemen over Maryland, Georgia and Boston College.

"He made his decision last night, he's going to Syracuse," Episcopal coach Tim Jaeger said Tuesday morning.

Onuaku averaged 14 points and 9 rebounds as a junior. He's got a huge body built for rugged contact. Not known for his offensive output, Jaeger says the colleges recruiting him were looking at his potential down the road.

"He's 6-foot-9, 250 and he's got a good body. He's got good feet and hands for a guy that size. The challenge for him is going to be finishing the play. He's got to turn that potential into reality."

In the end, Syracuse won a lengthy recruiting battle by making a solid impression on his official visit.

"I think that he just felt a gut feeling when he came back from the campus visit. There was a certain comfort level with the players and the coaches. All four of the programs were good. It was a hard decision for him. He said that he could have been happy at any one of the four schools." He's being recruited on potential right now.
