We spoke with Oestreicher's father, Jeff, last night about his son's recruitment.
Mr. Oestreicher told us that other schools expressing interest include Stanford, Minnesota, Pepperdine, UConn, Colgate, Cal, Yale, Harvard, Pacific, Oregon State, Washington State, Montana, Utah, Cornell and San Diego.
"Derek is really wide open at this point," said Mr. Oestreicher.
The Oestreichers took an unofficial visit to Stanford in June. We asked if there are any schools where Derek will definitely take official visits and Mr. Oestreicher replied, "Probably Valparaiso and New Mexico. Those two schools are recruiting him the hardest and have made their interest known. After those two, Cal, Oregon, Stanford and Oregon State are showing a lot of interest."
Look for education to play a prominent role in Oestreicher's choice. "Getting the best possible education is going to be a primary factor," said Mr. Oestreicher. "Also, Derek wants to play, so that will be an issue. He goes to a small, Christian high school, so finding someplace he feels comfortable will be important.
We spoke briefly with Derek after we talked with his father. Derek also said that academics would be very important, along with the coaching staff.
Derek has a 3.97 GPA according to his father and he's awaiting results from a recent PSAT test.
