Merthie Headed To Marshall

The Thundering Herd landed a good one on Tuesday. Darryl Merthie, the MVP of the Showtime National Championship picked Marshall.

Darryl Merthie, a 5-foot-11 point guard out of Lake Mary (Fla.) High, is headed to Marshall. According to Tallahassee Wildcats coach John Adkins, Merthie ended his recruitment this week.

"He's under the radar but that son of a gun can play," Adkins said. Merthie visited Houston and Colorado State and Central Florida was also in the hunt.

According to Adkins, the Gators, Hurricanes and Seminoles all wanted Merthie to prep a year and they would have recruited him.

Last July, in the finals of the Showtime National Championship, Merthie stepped up. He was the game's MVP and scored 25 points as his team downed Houston Elite.

Merthie is a powerful, albeit slightly undersized point man. He's a talent and should have an immediate impact on Marshall's program. "He's a scoring point guard. To me he can shoot the 3, but what I think he really does best is he goes to the hole, draws contact and finishes. He's very explosive."
