Top 10 Prep Poll

While Laurinburg continues to roll, a few of the teams that got off to slow starts have turned things around. Take a look at the latest Top 10 Prep Poll.

1.  LAURINBURG INSTITUTE (N.C.)
Record:23-0
Comments:Chris Chaney's club keeps rolling, winning the Prep Stars of Canada tournament behind the strong play of Shawne Williams (Memphis), Antonio Anderson (Memphis), Roburt Sallie (Washington) and tournament MVP Jamel White (Nebraska). White scored 18 in the title game, a convincing 102-74 win against No. 3 Lutheran Christian, while Williams added 17. Laurinburg also beat up on Prince Avenue and Charis Prep prior to the holiday break.
2.  HARGRAVE MILITARY ACADEMY (VA.)
Record:12-0
Comments:After proving themselves at the CSG National Prep Showcase, Hargrave showed it was no fluke with a title at the Fork Union Invitational. Tommie Liddell (St. Louis) scored 18 and Sam Young (Pittsburgh) added 16 points and 15 boards in a 83-64 win against host Fork Union in the championship game. AD Vassalo (Richmond) led the team with 21 in the semifinal game against New Hampton.
3.  LUTHERAN CHRISTIAN ACADEMY (PA.)
Record:14-1
Comments:We're giving Lutheran the nod over Brewster here because Darryl Schoefield & Co. beat up on Notre Dame Prep while Brewster lost to Bill Barton's club. Lutheran got their chance to face Laurinburg up north in Canada and lost, 102-74. Chris Matthews had 19 points in the setback. Dionte Christmas scored 19 in a win against Stoneridge Prep.
4.  BREWSTER ACADEMY (N.H.)
Record:9-2
Comments:After nearly knocking off Laurinburg in the CSG National Prep Showcase, Jason Smith's club reeled off three straight wins before suffering an upset of sorts against Notre Dame Prep in the title game of the MCI Invitational. However, Brewster responded with four consecutive victories, including a title-game win against MCI in Brewster's own tournament, prior to the holiday break. Chad Millard (Louisville) scored a season-high 23 points against MCI.
5.  FORK UNION MILITARY ACADEMY (VA.)
Record:8-1
Comments:Fletcher Arritt shocked many with early wins against Winchendon and St. Thomas More and then Fork Union knocked off Bridgton in the opening round of the Fork Union Invitational. However, without Mason Wooldridge (groin), Hargrave pulled away from Fork Union in the title game, 83-64. Mantoris Robinson averaged 14.5 points in the two games and Kyle Savely added 11 against Bridgton.
6.  WINCHENDON (MASS.)
Record:4-3
Comments:The record is deceiving. Mike Byrnes' club stumbled early, losing to Fork Union and Lutheran in New Jersey. Then it was a setback to Brewster in the opening round of the MCI Tourney before this group got rolling with four straight wins - including victories against MCI, South Kent and Notre Dame Prep. Tyree Evans (Cincinnati) put up 30 against ND Prep and 27 against South Kent.
7.  ST. THOMAS MORE (CONN.)
Record:10-2
Comments:Jere Quinn's crew got off to a slow start in New Jersey with losses to Hargrave and Fork Union, but a win against South Kent has these guys back among the elite. The three-heade monster of junior Antonio Pena, Dwayne Anderson (Villanova) and Edwin Lashley (St. Joseph's) is tough to stop when they're clicking.
8.  NOTRE DAME PREP (MASS.)
Record:10-4
Comments:This is certainly not the most talented team in the country, but Bill Barton has his guys playing hard after a tough start in which they were pounded by Laurinburg. A 23-point win against Brewster at the MCI Classic and a 95-78 victory against South Kent has ND Prep back in the Top 10 despite a loss to Winchendon. Unsigned senior guard Cam Tyler had 23 in the win over Brewster and Chester Frazier (Illinois) added 21.
9.  SOUTH KENT (CONN.)
Record:11-5
Comments:Five losses, but arguably the toughest schedule in the prep ranks. Losses are to the No. 2, 3, 6, 7 and 8 teams. Raphael Chillious & Co. bounced back with a title at the NYC Boys Club tourney, where they knocked off Northfield Mount Hermon in the semis and Blair in the title game. Andray Blatche scored 24 and Rob Thomas added 19 against Blair.
10.  NORTHFIELD MOUNT HERMON (MASS.)
Record:5-2
Comments:The two losses are to a pair of ranked teams - Brewster and South Kent - but NMH did post wins against New Hampton and Redemption and victories over Trinity Pawling, Boys Club and Lawrenceville in capturing the consolation title at the NYC Boys Club tourney. Unsigned senior forward Colin McIntosh had 15 points and 14 boards in the loss to South Kent and 20 points and 12 rebounds against the Boys Club.
Dropped Out:

No. 6 Bridgton Academy (N. Bridgton, Maine)

No. 8 Worcester Academy (Worcester, Mass.)
