City of Palms Feature: Spencer Hawes

FORT MEYERS, Fla. – Spencer Hawes is blossoming into a big time prospect and the City of Palms Classic was his stage on opening night. Scout.com caught up with Hawes and got his take on where his recruitment stands.

On Saturday night at the City of Palms Classic, 6-foot-11 junior center Spencer Hawes had his biggest game of the young season. In a big win, Hawes went for 35 points and 12 rebounds. He took center stage and the No. 10 prospect is showing that his game is evolving and he's comfortable being an elite national recruit.

Hawes' success didn't come overnight. The big man is steadily progressing and last summer was key for him. "I think it was probably at Nike Camp [where I started getting comfortable]," Hawes said.

"Going in there and playing well helped. You have to be comfortable with yourself.

Make no mistake about it, Hawes is one comfortable kid. The strides he's made from last season to now are noticeable.

"Last year I definitely wasn't as strong and I wasn't able to hold my own inside," Hawes said. "Now, the game has slowed down and I can really read the plays."

As for his recruiting, Hawes has maintained a long list – still does – and it he's not ready to cut anybody just yet. When asked, Hawes was forthcoming with a list that included Kansas, Texas, Washington, Gonzaga, UCLA, Arizona, Duke, UNC, N.C. State, Kentucky and Stanford.

"I'm looking at a school that integrates the big men," Hawes said. "I want tradition; now and what that tradition will be when I get there."

Make no mistake about it, Spencer Hawes is getting there.
