Jessie Byrd Still Open

Jessie Byrd is a terrific post player who figures to draw plenty of interest in the spring...

Jessie Byrd, 6-7 SR PF Oakland (Calif.) Bishop O'Dowd, is very talented and he's academically qualified.

However, Byrd wasn't completely satisified with his options in the fall and he decided to wait until the spring to choose a college. Based on what we saw this week at the Torrey Pines tournament, we think Byrd will have plenty of options in April.

We spoke with Byrd on Monday and asked him about the schools on his list.

"Penn State, UC Santa Barbara and San Francisco have all come out to see me," said Byrd. "UCLA has some interest, but I'm not sure where they're at. Fresno State and Lehigh are also involved."

Byrd has taken visits to UC Santa Barbara and Lehigh. We asked if there are other schools he knows he'd like to visit.

"I want to visit Penn State," said Byrd. "I'd like to visit UCLA, but we'll see how that goes."

We asked Byrd which schools have offered scholarships and he replied, "All of them have offered except for UCLA. They might want me to walk on, but I'd prefer to get a scholarship somewhere right now."

Byrd told us he has a 2.7 GPA and scored 1140 on the SAT.
