Interest In Barea Grows

Miami Christian point guard Jose Barea is receiving plenty of interest these days, as are a number of underclassmen that head coach Art Alvarez has in his stable.

Christian Has Plenty of Prospects

Jose Barea is a relative newcomer to the high school basketball scene. His in his first year playing in the United State, but it's a good year.

Barea was terrific at the City of Palms event in late December and he's been very good since then. Good enough to procure a scholarship offer from Monte Towe New Orleans and interest from plenty of others.

Marquette sent assistant coach Darrin Horn to Miami on Monday. The Golden Eagles are recruiting Barea. So is Florida International, Florida Atlantic and Northeastern. Alabama is sending someone to see him next week.

Miami Christian head coach Art Alvarez understands why it's taken a little while to kick start Barea's recruitment. "The problem is this kid came late and a lot of schools are looking at him if one of their kids doesn't make it." Alvarez said Florida's been in touch and might dabble if something breaks scholarship wise.

Trips to see Miami Christian these days also center around a pair of juniors in the program. Power forward Ivan Lopez and swingman Jesus Verdejo are Top 100 caliber prospects. "John Calipari loves the juniors," Alvarez said. Calipari was in town Monday to watch Christian in action.
