Washington Reclassed To 2006

Haven't heard much from Michael Washington lately? Wondering where he's been on the radar? Good questions because he's popped up in Texas and you're probably going to be hearing a lot from him in the next year.

Michael Washington, a 6-foot-9 power forward, has a new lease on basketball and school. The McGehee (Ark.) High standout took his game to Cleveland (Tex.) Heritage Christian this year where he's been reclassified as a member of the Class of 2006.

The sweet shooting forward needed a new home. Academically he was struggling back in Arkansas and it was time for a change.

"To be quite honest with you, his basketball skills have pretty much exploded but what we're most proud of is what he's done academically," Arkansas Wings AAU coach Mike Charles said. "He had a 3.2 GPA the first semester. He's really matured not just academically and personally but athletically too."

Charles is really pleased with how Washington is coming around and now his legit face-up game has been augmented with some structure. "When I first saw him," Charles said, "he wasn't refined, he was just playing off his athleticism.

"He's really a 3-4 combo who can also be a major player at the four. He doesn't play that well with his back to the basket but we're trying more to develop his perimeter skills."

Apparently, coaches are taking notes on the progression and most like what they see.

"Arkansas is interested in him," Charles said. "Oklahoma State has been on him since the beginning. LSU, Georgia and Alabama all offered him right after AAU season. Miami has shone interest and North Carolina called and Steve Robinson is crazy about him."

Oklahoma State, Oklahoma and Arkansas are recruiting him hard.
