Richmond and Chesapeake were two hot areas last weekend as each hosted small, but loaded, high school events. Despite the weather, director Thomas Leachman brought in some talented teams and players to compete.
Scout.com would have loved to cover both the Slamfest and Battle By The Bay, but inclement weather prevented us from traveling.
Oak Hill Academy got back to its winning ways as it clobbered L.C. Bird 94-69 Friday night. Kevin Durant was the aggressor in this one has he had 23 points and 9 rebounds and made 9 of his 15 shots. Fellow junior Tywon Lawson also tossed in 23. Bird was led by unsigned senior Tyrese Rice who got 30 on 20 shots and made 5 3s.
Uche Echefu led Montrose past Benedictine in a sleepwalk 78-39. Echefu, an unsigned senior who is being recruited by Michigan and several ACC teams, finished with 24 points and 10 rebounds. Teammate Adrian Bowie, a sophomore slasher, had 15 points and 8 assists. Reid Augst scored 19 for Benedictine.
Maryland commit Eric Hayes, a junior point guard, had 22 points (7-10 FG, 4-6 3s) as Potomac nipped Hermitage 51-49. Unsigned senior power forward Greg Redford, a top mid-major recruit, went for 21 and 13.
BATTLE OF THE BAY
Scott Reynolds of Herndon has had some big scoring games this season and the trend continued on Saturday when Scout.com's No. 43 junior dropped 53 points on I.C. Norcom. Herndon won the game 91-81 but it couldn't stop Vernon Macklin (Scout.com No. 5) who rang up 31 points and 19 rebounds on 15-for-21 from the field. Reynolds did his damage by making 6 3-pointers and going 19-for-40 from the field to go with 4 assists and 6 steals.
For the second game in a row, No. 2 junior Kevin Durant lifted Oak Hill to a victory. This team out, Oak Hill smacked Woodside 104-76. Durant, a 6-foot-9 forward, went for 29 and 16 rebounds. Senior Eric Devendorf added 23 and junior point man Tywon Lawson dropped 8 dimes for the winners. Stefan Welsh, a junior shooting guard, dropped 9 3s for a total of 31 points.
Norfolk Collegiate dropped host Oscar Smith 83-78 behind 20 points and 8 rebounds from 6-foot-9 junior power forward Karolis Petrukonis who only missed 2 shots all night long. R.J. Douglas led Smith with 24.
Oaktree Academy defeated Steward School 67-56 behind 23 points from Pervis Stevenson.
