VCU Rams Land Tidewater Talent

The VCU Rams landed an outstanding post prospect last weekend. Eric Whitehurst, a standout from Oaktree Academy, opted to become part of Jeff Capel's recruiting class.

Anytime you can land a 6-foot-9 prospect during the spring signing period, you're probably doing well for yourself. Anytime a mid-major can land a 6-9 prospect that averages 20 points and 13 rebounds, you've really outdone yourself.

The Virginia Commonwealth Rams received a commitment from Chesapeake (Va.) Oaktree Academy power forward Eric Whitehurst last weekend. The former Boo Williams standout visited the school unofficially last weekend.

"I think the big thing about Eric is that his upside and potential is limitless," Oaktree coach Ryan Pauling said. "He can only get bigger and stronger and faster."

VCU, Rutgers, Old Dominion and St. Bonaventure recruited him hard throughout the process.

"He was on an AAU team this summer that was loaded with talent and he didn't a lot of time to play," Pauling said. "These schools have been there since day one through the end."

Jeff Capel and his staff did an excellent job of relationship building with Whitehurst and in the end that really mattered to the young man.

"I really think that he and Coach Capel have developed a relationship and he's excited about playing for him for four years," Pauling said. "He relates to Coach Capel and he's young enough that Eric can remember seeing him play."
