FLORIDA INSIDERS UPDATE (Week of Jan 28.)

ADIDAS Basketball Shootout (Orlando, Fl)

The featured match-up had small school power Miami Christian, rated #1 in Class 1A, facing the host and large school power Edgewater HS, rated #2 in Class 6A. The visitors from south Florida lead by 5 at halftime and went up by 10 in the 4th period, but EHS isn't known for quitting, and rode the shoulders of a very talented sophomore trio of Darius Washington, BJ Johnson and Kenny Ingram. Edgewater rallied from 10 down with a little over 4 minutes to go and actually took a 4 point lead, but MC's highly skilled backcourt wasn't going to let this one get away.

Miami Christian sharpshooting guard Carlos Rivera scores the winning basket with 7 seconds remaining, his 20th and 21st points. Rivera's a mid-major target that is rated among the Top 10 prospects in the state. Underrated PG Jose Barea led with 22, and rising junior big man Ivan Lopez added 9. Darius Washington scored 19.

Ovideo HS escapes with a 79-77 win over The Pendleton school (Bradenton,Fl). Mid-major recruit Shawn Witherspoon put on show with 37 points for the winners, scoring in a variety of post moves and mid-range jump shots. Not to be outdone soph, Danny Morrissey led Pendleton with 36 on 8 three-pointers. Rising junior Renaldo Balkman continued to look good as well, and has been labeled as the next High-Major prospect in this class!

FYI: The Pendleton School

Florida's newest State-of-the-Art basketball Academy is owned and operated by IMG Inc. Pendleton opened in fall 2001 to educate and train present and future star athletes in the same manner as the Tennis Academies that were also started by IMG. The school is looking to recruit the top talent nationally and compete with the likes of Oak Hill Academy (Va). Stay tuned for more updates on Pendleton.
