Laurinburg-Hargrave Battle for No. 1

Top-ranked Laurinburg and No. 2 Hargrave went at it on Friday night in North Carolina - and only one team left the court unbeaten.

Laurinburg Institute (N.C.) had a fitting end to its season.

The ultra-talented prep school squad knocked off No. 2 Hargrave Military Academy, 95-83, in the nightcap of the 2nd Annual Champions Classic on Friday night at the Holmes Center in Boone, N.C.

Memphis-bound Antonio Anderson scored 19 points, grabbed 8 rebounds and had 5 assists to earn MVP honors in the game that was put together by Laurinburg coach Chris Chaney and Hargrave head man Kevin Keatts just a few weeks ago.

Laurinburg led 50-40 at the break, but Hargrave tied the game early in the second half – largely in part to the outside shooting of A.D. Vassalo (Richmond). The score remained close until the midway part of the second half, when Laurinburg received big plays from Anderson, Roburt Sallie (Washington) and unsigned senior guard Quantez Robinson.

``It was a very competitive game," Chaney said. "Both teams played hard – as expected – and it was a great atmosphere."

``We set a goal at the beginning of the season not just to win the national championship, but also to go undefeated," he added.

Laurinburg's season ended with 40 wins and not a single loss.

``Hargrave did an excellent job of taking us out of everything we were doing," Chaney said. "But our guys played unselfish and we only had four turnovers"

Sallie led Laurinburg with 22 points while Shawne Williams added 13 and Kareem Cooper chipped in with 12. Vassalo led Hargrave with 19 points and 12 rebounds while Pittsburgh-bound Sam Young added 18 points and 11 boards in the loss. Hargrave also got 16 points from Tommy Liddell (St. Louis) and 10 from Shane Clark (Maryland).
