Welsh Looking for Repeat

Stefan Welsh hardly looked like a guy who was in bed most of last week when he put 28 on the board this past weekend in a playoff game. The junior guard is definitely someone to watch this spring and summer, but for now he's focused on another state title.

Stefan Welsh missed a couple days of school with a stomach virus, but the Woodside High (Va.) junior guard wasn't going to miss the playoffs.

The 6-2 ½, 175-pound explosive scorer, who is averaging 18 points and 6 assists per game this season, put up 28 points in a 86-62 victory against Garfield High on Saturday in the Group AAA quarterfinals.

Welsh also had six steals in the game as Woodside ran its record to 28-2 and is looking to defend its Group AAA state championship.

Welsh has played primarily shooting guard this season alongside William & Mary-bound floor leader Calvin Baker.

``Calvin's running the show," Welsh said. "I'll probably play some point this summer."

``Schools are recruiting me to play combo guard," he added. "It doesn't really matter to me which I play. I just want to contribute wherever I can."

Welsh will once again be one of the feature guys for a loaded Boo Williams squad this spring and summer, along with guys like Scotty Reynolds, Vernon Macklin, Eric Hayes and Duke Crews.

Welsh said that he's been offered by Virginia Tech, Virginia, Ohio State, Xavier, Maryland, Clemson and N.C. State. He said that Illinois, Georgetown, Boston College, Arkansas and Miami are also interested.

``I like Xavier a lot," Welsh admitted. "They've been my favorite all season."
