2006 Focus: Kyle Austin

Kyle Austin gives us a first look at his recruitment...

Kyle Austin, 6-6 JR PF Pasadena (Calif.) High, didn't have a big reputation coming into his CIF title game against Dominguez last Saturday at the Pond in Anaheim. But the junior forward impressed everyone who watched that game and he figures to start hearing from a lot of college programs at the mid to high major level.

We spoke with Austin recently and asked him about the schools that have contacted him so far.

"There haven't been a lot," said Austin. "I've just been getting mail from a few schools, including Texas A & M, Portland, Stanford and Brown."

We asked Austin if he's given much thought to the criteria he'll consider when choosing a school.

"Not really," said Austin. "I just want to play at a major D1 school."

Austin told us location won't be a big factor in his choice.

"Staying close isn't really an issue," said Austin. "I wouldn't mind going back east -- I think they play better ball back there."

Austin said he won't worry too much about early playing time.

"Early time is not necessarily important," said Austin. "I could even redshirt a year. I'm just trying to get to a big-time program." We asked Austin about the timing of his decision and he replied, "I want to go into my senior year knowing where I'll be going to school." Austin told us he has a 3.3 GPA this year and had a 3.5 the last two years. He'll take the SAT later this month.
