The good news for Greensburg (IN) High junior shooting guard Robert Barker is that he's committed to Xavier University. Unfortunately, the bad news is that his junior basketball season ended prematurely.
Days after receiving an offer from Thad Matta, Barker had the misfortune of tearing his ACL. However, that didn't stop the Musketeers from keeping their promise of a scholarship offer. In two weeks, Barker will have surgery and begin his rehabilitation.
Prior to the injury, the 6-5 Barker was having a terrific season. He was averaging 24.1 points a game. "He's a 6-5 guard with point guard skills and he's being recruited as a shooting guard," Greensburg head coach Keith Hipskind said. He's a great passer." For Xavier, Barker's roll will be to bury jumpers from downtown.
Actually, Xavier's courtship of Barker is an interesting story. Indiana and Purdue had shown interest but Xavier is just 50 miles from Barker's home. The Musketeers hadn't seen him play until last month and once they witnessed him in action, it wasn't long before Matta himself went to a game and offered the youngster a few days later on an unofficial visit to campus.
"It was a good match for him and he really just liked it," Hipskind said. "It's close to home with a small setting that he kind of liked."
Barker is scheduled to play with Bloomington Red this summer should he recover from the surgery in time.
TheInsidersHoops.com would like to send our best wishes to Barker for a speedy recovery. With the advances in medicine, especially in that area, he should be good to go in no time.
